The concept behind Kaifun Chungli is to bring the sensation of taste to life through visual cues. The designer has painted the space with colors inspired by the ingredients used in Sichuan cuisine. As guests enter the restaurant, they are greeted by a malachite wall adorned with Sichuan peppercorn and star anise, creating a visual representation of the flavors that await them.
One of the standout features of Kaifun Chungli is a window formed by gauze layered glass. This intriguing design element fills guests with curiosity and imagination, inviting them to step into a world where art and cuisine collide. The restaurant's multi-layered light design, located in a department store, adds to its charm and creates a sense of anticipation as guests approach.
To further enhance the dining experience, humorous illustrations are scattered throughout the space, giving it a fun and playful vibe. These illustrations, combined with the vibrant colors and unique design elements, create a dining environment that is both visually stimulating and enjoyable.
The design of Kaifun Chungli also incorporates three-dimensional white shapes that contrast with the colorful spectrum on the walls. This juxtaposition adds depth and visual interest to the space, creating a dynamic and engaging atmosphere.
Cheng Qi's design for Kaifun Chungli was not without its challenges. Sichuan cuisine is known for its ever-changing flavors and distinct taste, and the designer had to find a way to capture the essence of this cuisine in a visual form. By using colors inspired by the ingredients and incorporating unique design elements, Cheng Qi successfully translated the flavors of Sichuan cuisine into a visually stunning dining experience.
The Kaifun Chungli project started in November 2016 in Taipei and was completed in May 2017 in Chungli. Since its completion, the restaurant has received recognition for its innovative design. In 2018, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award recognizes the restaurant's well-designed, practical, and innovative approach, as well as its contribution to creating a better world through its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics.
Kaifun Chungli is not just a restaurant; it is a work of art that brings the vibrant flavors of Sichuan cuisine to life. With its unique design elements, playful illustrations, and vibrant colors, this modern art Sichuan restaurant offers a dining experience that is as visually captivating as it is delicious.
